Home Remodeling

What we do: kitchen, bathroom, deck, and general remodeling across Cape Cod

Kitchen renovation in progress managed by a licensed general contractor in Cape Cod, MA

Compass Home Group is a full scope general contractor. One licensed company handles the framing, the plumbing rough, the electrical, the tile, the cabinets and the finish carpentry on the same job. Homeowners are not left coordinating four trades who each blame the other one.

That matters more here than in most markets. A homeowner in a 1955 Cape came to us for two bathrooms and ended up with a half bath converted into a full bath, because the layout was the real problem and the tile never was. Open the wall in an older Cape home and the framing behind a cabinet run is rarely what anyone expected.

We work out of 47-4 Warehouse Rd in Hyannis. Ivan Junior is on site with his father and his brother.

Completed white kitchen remodeling project with island and stone countertops in Cape Cod

Kitchen Remodeling in Cape Cod

Full kitchen remodels covering layout, framing, plumbing, electrical, cabinets, counters and tile. Cape Cod kitchens are often small, chopped up and closed off from the rest of the house. One licensed crew handles the job from demo to final punch list.

Bathroom Remodeling in Cape Cod

Bathroom rebuilds that address water damage, failing tile, soft subfloor and poor venting before anything cosmetic goes back in. Adding a bathroom does not increase septic design flow under Title 5, so most Cape Cod bathroom projects do not trigger a septic upgrade.

Granite steps and natural stone retaining wall built in Cape Cod

Masonry and Hardscaping in Cape Cod

Retaining walls, paver patios, driveways, walkways and stone steps, built on a compacted base with drainage behind the wall. Sandy Cape soil moves. A patio, a wall or a path that settled did not settle because of the stone. It settled because of the base.

Deck Building in Cape Cod

Decks built for coastal exposure, wind load and the freeze cycle. Standard hardware rusts out here within a few winters, so coastal decks get stainless and hot dip galvanized fasteners and properly flashed ledgers. Permitted and inspected in your town.

Siding in Cape Cod

Cedar shingle, clapboard and fiber cement siding, installed new or repaired after storm damage. Most Cape Cod siding failures start behind the siding, in a water resistive barrier that was never installed correctly. We correct the barrier and the flashing first.

Home Additions in Cape Cod

Room additions, second stories, finished basements and attic conversions, plus the finish carpentry that makes them look like they belong in the house. An addition that adds a bedroom increases Title 5 septic design flow, at 110 gallons per day. The board of health comes before the framing.

Ground up construction from foundation to final inspection, run under Ivan's Construction Supervisor License. Building on the Cape means clearing the town, the board of health, and in many cases a historic district committee or conservation commission before a shovel moves.

Cabinet Refinishing or Kitchen Remodel | Compass Home Group

Refinish or Rebuild

Should You Refinish or Replace Your Kitchen Cabinets?

Refinish when the cabinet boxes are structurally sound and the layout already works. Replace when the layout has to change, the boxes are water damaged, or the kitchen needs to move. We tell you which one your kitchen actually needs before you spend anything, even when the answer costs us the bigger job.

Refinishing is handled by Compass Painting, the Junior family's painting company, which sprays cabinet doors and boxes in a 3,600 square foot finishing shop instead of in your kitchen. If the answer is a full remodel, that is Compass Home Group. Same family, two licenses, and you get an honest answer either way.

When to Schedule a Cape Cod Construction Project

Project Planning

When Should You Schedule a Project on Cape Cod?

Interior work runs best from fall through spring, when second home owners are off the Cape and the house can be taken apart without disrupting the season. Exterior work runs spring through fall, once the ground has thawed. Permitting is the part homeowners underestimate, so the planning starts earlier than the building.

Contractor reviewing home remodeling project plans in Cape Cod
Project Best window Why
Kitchen and bathroom remodeling Fall through spring House can be out of use. Second home owners are off Cape.
Decks, patios, retaining walls and driveways Spring through fall Footings and base work need thawed ground.
Siding Spring through fall Dry conditions for the water barrier and flashing.
Home additions Plan in winter, build spring through fall Septic and board of health review comes before framing.
New home construction Plan in winter, break ground in spring Town approvals take the longest lead time.

One thing Cape Cod homeowners consistently underestimate: getting the approval is often slower than doing the work. North of Route 6, exterior work visible from the road runs through the Old King's Highway historic district committee and needs a Certificate of Appropriateness. Coastal lots may go through the town conservation commission. Anything that changes bedroom count goes to the board of health under Title 5. A summer start date usually means a winter phone call.

What to Look for in a Cape Cod General Contractor

Homeowner Guide

What to Look for in a Cape Cod General Contractor

Ask for Both License Numbers, Not the Word "Licensed"

Massachusetts issues two different credentials, and they are not interchangeable. A Construction Supervisor License covers structural work and requires passing a building code exam. A Home Improvement Contractor registration is a separate state registration. Ask for both numbers and check them yourself in the state Contractor Hub. It takes under a minute.

Ask Who Is Pulling the Permit

A homeowner who pulls their own building permit in Massachusetts gives up eligibility for the state Guaranty Fund, which covers up to $25,000 on an unpaid judgment against a registered contractor. A contractor who asks the homeowner to pull the permit is moving risk off their books and onto yours.

Ask for the Contract in Writing Before Anyone Starts

Massachusetts law requires home improvement contracts over $1,000 to be in writing. That written contract is also what makes a homeowner eligible for arbitration and for the Guaranty Fund if the job goes wrong. A handshake and a verbal number leave you with no path forward and no protection.

Ask Whether They Have Worked Inside Your Town's Approval Process

Cape Cod adds layers most of Massachusetts does not have. Exterior work north of Route 6 goes through the Old King's Highway historic district committee. Coastal lots may go through the conservation commission. Anything that changes bedroom count goes to the board of health under Title 5. A contractor who has never sat in those rooms will underestimate the schedule.

Our Process

How We Work With Cape Cod Homeowners

Cape Cod home project consultation and planning with the Compass family team
One Team From Start to Finish Consultation, scope, permits and construction

1. Free consultation at your home

We walk the space, look behind the surfaces where we can, and talk honestly about what the budget actually buys. Nobody signs anything that day. If refinishing is the smarter call than replacing, we say it.

2. Written scope and written schedule

Everything comes back in writing. What is included, what is not, what it costs and when it happens. A price given before anyone looks behind the tile is a guess, and guesses turn into change orders.

3. Permits and town approvals, pulled by us

We pull the permits. The town building permit, the board of health when Title 5 applies, and the historic district committee when the work is visible from a public way.

4. Build, finish, warranty

Ivan, his brother and their father are on site. One point of contact for the whole job. Every project carries a written one year workmanship warranty, and if something we installed fails, we come back.

Bathroom remodel in a 1955 Cape Cod home with glass shower and freestanding tub

A 1955 home, two bathrooms and the ceilings

JP came to us for two bathrooms in a 1955 home. The half bath became a full bath, which in an older Cape means solving the layout and the plumbing before anything cosmetic happens. The drop ceilings came out and were replaced with sheetrock.

Licensed at both levels, and you can check

Ivan Junior holds Massachusetts Construction Supervisor License CS122588. Compass Home Group is registered as a Home Improvement Contractor, number 217100. Both are active and searchable in the state Contractor Hub.

Hiring a registered contractor protects up to $25,000

The Massachusetts Home Improvement Contractor Guaranty Fund compensates homeowners up to $25,000 for an unpaid judgment against a registered contractor. That protection only exists if the contractor is registered and pulls the permit. With an unregistered contractor it does not exist at any price.

A family that has been finishing Cape Cod homes since 2009

Ivan works with his father and his brother. The family has been painting and finishing homes on Cape Cod since 2009 under Compass Painting, which still runs today with eleven employees. Compass Home Group is the licensed construction company that grew out of that work.

Yes. We pull every permit the project requires, including the town building permit, the board of health when Title 5 applies, and the historic district committee when the work is visible from a public way. If you pull your own permit, you lose Guaranty Fund eligibility.

Cabinet refinishing is handled by Compass Painting, the Junior family's painting company, in a 3,600 square foot finishing shop in Hyannis. Compass Home Group handles the remodel when the layout, the plumbing or the cabinets themselves need to change.

If the addition adds a bedroom, yes, it can. Title 5 calculates septic design flow at 110 gallons per day per bedroom, so a new bedroom increases the load. A new bathroom does not. We check with the board of health before any framing goes up. See home additions in Cape Cod for the full process.

Yes. Ivan Junior holds a Massachusetts Construction Supervisor License, which is what a full home build requires. New construction on the Cape clears the town, the board of health, and in many cases a conservation commission or historic district committee before construction starts.
