Cape Cod sits on sand. That single fact explains almost every hardscape failure on the peninsula. A patio that settled unevenly, a retaining wall that leans out, a brick path that has gone wavy, stone steps that shifted over a winter. In every one of those cases the stone did exactly what it was supposed to do. The base did not.
Water is the other half of it. A retaining wall with no drainage behind it is holding back saturated soil, and saturated soil is heavy. Walls built without drainage fail, and they fail from behind, where nobody is looking. Then there is the part specific to the Cape. Most properties here have a septic field, and redirecting water away from a foundation on one side of a house often means sending it toward the leach field on the other. A saturated leach field is a failing leach field.

Every hardscape on Cape Cod lives or dies on the base. That means excavation to proper depth, a compacted aggregate base, and compaction in lifts rather than all at once. A contractor who talks only about stone selection and never about base depth is selling you a surface, not a structure.
A retaining wall holds back wet soil, and wet soil is heavy. Proper drainage means a drainage stone layer behind the wall, a perforated pipe at the base, and a filter fabric so the soil does not clog it. A wall built without that is a wall on a countdown.
Most Cape Cod properties run on septic, and a leach field needs to stay unsaturated to work. Redirecting roof and surface water away from a foundation can send it straight toward the leach field. Any grading plan here has to solve for both, and a contractor who has never thought about it will solve for one.
